What Your Aura Colors Mean

A double rainbow hung over Austin last week, two full arcs after a light afternoon rain, and I stood on the porch until the streetlights came on. It was the kind of light that makes you forget to do anything else. I have spent my whole life chasing light, first as a kid in Flagstaff watching storms roll across the San Francisco Peaks, and now as a consciousness consultant who keeps telling people to look up. So when a client asked me the next morning what her aura colors meant, I already knew how to begin. People treat the aura like a secret you need a special gift to see. It is not. It is the body's own light, the field of energy that surrounds every living thing, and the colors in it are simply how that energy is moving on any given day. You do not need to be psychic to begin. You need to slow down, soften your eyes, and stop trying so hard. That is the whole first lesson. ## The Light

Is Real Every tradition that has ever looked closely at the body has seen the same thing: a field, a glow, a subtle light that extends beyond the skin. The yogis called it prana, the energy that moves through everything. Hermetic teaching says as above, so below, the same pattern repeating from the stars down to the smallest cell. Science is catching up in its own careful way, mapping the faint electromagnetic and heat fields our bodies give off. The aura is where those two stories meet. It is not a metaphor. It is the weather of your own energy, and it changes with your moods, your health, and the company you keep. When I say the aura has color, I mean the light itself carries a tint the way a flame carries blue at its center. You have felt this without naming it. You walk into a room and someone feels bright, or heavy, or warm. That is your own field reading theirs before your mind has

a word for it. Learning to see the colors is mostly learning to trust what you already sense. ## How to Begin Seeing It Start with your own hands. Sit in soft light, not harsh, and hold one hand up against a plain white wall or a sheet of paper. Let your eyes relax, the way they do when you stare out a window without focusing on anything. After a little while, do not be surprised if you notice a faint outline, a thin band of light just beyond the fingers. That is the beginning. Most people try to look too directly, and the aura slips away the way a faint star does when you stare straight at it. You see it best out of the corner of your eye. The next step is to try it on another person, ideally someone sitting quietly with a plain wall behind them. Soften your gaze to the space just above their shoulder. Ask yourself what color the space seems to hold before you let your mind argue with

the answer. The first impression is usually the truest one. Write it down before you second-guess it, because the thinking mind loves to talk over the part of you that actually saw. I make my yoga students do this before class. Half of them think they imagined it, and half of them are surprised by how clearly it came through. Both reactions are the same person standing on the edge of trusting their own perception. That trust is the real skill, more than the seeing. ## What the Colors Suggest Here is the gentle key I share with clients, and I want to say first that these are suggestions, not verdicts. A color is a mood, not a label. But when you are learning, a rough map helps. Red speaks of grounding, of the body alive and rooted, of will and healthy heat. Orange is creation, the color of making something, of appetite and joy. Yellow is the light of the thinking self, willpower and clear

intention, the sun at noon. Green is the healer, growth, the heart opening toward compassion. Blue is truth, communication, a calm river running underneath. Violet and purple belong to vision, to the doorway between here and spirit. White and silver carry purity and connection, the sense of being held by something larger. Do not read a single color as a sentence handed down. A red aura does not mean a person is angry. It might mean they have been working with their body, or recovering from illness, or simply that they are very, very alive today. Read the colors the way you read weather, as information about conditions, not judgments about character. ## The Shadow of the Seer Here is the part I have to be honest about, because it is my own shadow and I keep meeting it. I am a hero type, the one who wants to see so I can help, and there is a trap inside that. The moment you can see a

color, you want to sort it. Green means heal, so I should fix them. Red means stuck, so I should push them. And the second I start filing people by color, I have stopped seeing them at all. The aura is not a diagnostic chart. It is a face the light makes when it is being looked at with love. The point of seeing it is not to categorize anyone, least of all yourself. The point is to witness. When I remember that, the colors soften and the whole room brightens, and I realize I was never the one doing the fixing. The light was already whole. ## Practice Like a Sun Worshiper You do not need an hour. You need five quiet minutes, a plain background, and the patience of someone watching a sunrise. Try it on your hands for a few mornings. Then try it on a friend. Keep a small notebook and write one line after each attempt, the color you thought you saw and what was happening inside you at that

moment. In a month you will have a map of your own seeing, and it will be worth more than any chart I could give you. I practice at dawn because I am a sun person and the light is kindest then, low and gold. I stand barefoot in the yard, do a few slow breaths, and let my eyes soften on the horizon. The sun does not strain to rise. It just rises, and the sky takes the color. Your own light works the same way. It is not something you force. It is something you finally stop hiding from. ## Closing Reflection That double rainbow is gone now, but the light it taught me is still here. Color is not a test. It is the universe being generous with you, the way it has always been. Your aura was not waiting for permission to exist. It has been glowing around you the entire time, and the only thing that ever changed is that you decided to look. So begin where I began: soften your eyes, hold up your

hand, and trust the first color that arrives. The sky has always been yours, and the light around you is just the part of it that never left your side.
