What to Expect From Your First Tarot Reading

For most of my life I have been the person on the listening side of the table. People come to me with the things they cannot say out loud yet, and I hold still while they find the words. I have sat across from a lot of seekers. What I almost never do is take the seat on the other side. Last week, for the first time in ages, I requested a reading. I am a holistic life coach in Austin. I lead Tai Chi in the park, I tend a healing garden at the retreat center, and I guide past-life regressions. I believe deeply in the work of being seen. So you would think sitting down for a tarot reading would come easily to me. It did not. It was unfamiliar in a way that caught me off guard. If you have been thinking about your first reading and keep putting it off, this is for you. Here is what I wish someone had told me before the first card turned over. ## You Do Not Have to Believe Anything First A

lot of people assume you need to walk in already convinced, with the deck memorized and your faith neatly arranged. You do not. A reading is not a test of your belief. It is a mirror with old symbols painted across it, and the mirror works whether you arrive curious, skeptical, tired, or half-hoping. Think of it like a photograph. When you look at a picture of yourself, you notice things your own eyes never catch in the bathroom mirror. Tarot is a little like that. The reader lays down images people have been turning over for centuries, and together the two of you notice what jumps out. The only thing you have to bring is honesty about what you actually want to know. And for someone like me, who spends his days being the calm steady one, that turns out to be the first hard part. ## What Actually Happens The practical part is gentle. You sit down, in person or on a call. The reader asks

what brings you in. They shuffle, and they begin laying cards into a pattern called a spread. Some readers talk the whole way through. Some go quiet for a long moment. There is no drumroll, no theatrics unless you want them. Mostly it is two people looking at pictures and letting the pictures start a conversation. A good reader does not hand you a verdict. They hand you a set of prompts. Here is what is heavy in your hands right now. Here is what you keep setting down. Here is where the light seems to want to go. I expected it to feel like being read. It felt more like being accompanied while I read myself. ## How to Ask a Question Worth Asking The question shapes the whole thing, so do not waste it on a yes or no. 'Will I ever find love' closes a door. 'What is standing between me and the love I want' opens one. Come with one question, maybe two, and keep it about you. The cards are far

better at reflecting your inner weather than at predicting anyone else's choices. Give the reader a little context. Not your whole biography, just enough that the symbols have somewhere to land. A good question plus a little honesty does most of the work. And if you do not know what to ask, say exactly that. 'I just want to see what comes up' is a perfectly fine question, and it is a kinder one than you think. ## The Part Nobody Warns You About Here is what surprised me most. What came up in my reading was not some stranger's future. It was the same themes my own life has been circling for months. The quiet work of rising again. The garden I keep tending. The fire I keep stoking for other people while my own coals go unattended. A reading rarely hands you something out of nowhere. Mostly it turns up the volume on what your own intuition was already whispering. That can be deeply

comforting. It can also be a little exposing. I sat there feeling seen in a way I am usually the one offering to other people. For a caregiver, that is unfamiliar ground. It is also, I think, the entire point. The cards did not tell me my fate. They handed me my own reflection and asked if I was ready to look at it. I am still deciding, honestly, but I am glad I finally looked. ## Closing Reflection If you have been waiting for permission to sit for your first reading, consider this it. You do not need to believe, you do not need to be in crisis, and you do not need to know a wand from a sword. You only need a question and a little courage. Come curious, come honest, and the cards will meet you where you are. I waited far too long. Do not be like me.
