Learning to Draw What I Usually Hear
By Sol Runemaster
The invitation came out of nowhere, the way the best ones always do. A visual artist I met once, years ago, wrote to ask if I would help her build a celestial art exhibit. She wanted to paint the sky, not the constellations themselves, but the relationships between them. The angles. The conjunctions. The parts of a birth chart that do not have a picture yet. She said she needed someone who could hear it. I am a sound healer, not a painter. My tools are singing bowls and a thrifted telescope and notebooks full of messy arrows. But the more I sat with the idea, the more it made a strange kind of sense. I have spent thirty years turning things I cannot see into things I can feel. Maybe that was exactly what she was asking for. ## A Chart Is Not a Picture People think an astrology chart is a diagram, and on paper I suppose it is. A circle, twelve houses, planets scattered inside like stones
on a table. But I have never experienced it that way. When I sit with a client's chart, what I feel is movement. Planets tugging at each other, a square pressing, a trine easing open. It is a room full of instruments, not a drawing. The artist kept asking me to describe things. What color is that conjunction, she would say. What shape does a grand trine make. I did not have answers at first. I had been living inside the chart for so long that I had forgotten it could be looked at from the outside. ## What a Sound Healer Brings to a Canvas Here is what I know. Everything is resonance. A color is a frequency. A shape is a rhythm. The reason a painting can make your chest ache is the same reason a singing bowl can, if you let it. It is not the note. It is the way the note keeps ringing after you have stopped striking it. So I told her to think of each planet as a note and each aspect as an
interval. A trine is not a friendly triangle, it is a fifth, harmonious and resolving. A square is a tritone, the interval that never quite rests. Paint them that way and the chart stops being a map and becomes a chord. A chord is something you can feel with your eyes closed. ## The Part I Did Not Want to Paint This is where my old friend denial showed up, the way it always does when I try too hard to keep things pretty. I wanted the exhibit to be only the lovely parts. The trines, the soft Venus placements, the aspects that make people sigh. But a birth chart is not a greeting card. It has squares and oppositions and retrogrades. It has the parts of a life that hurt. The artist would not let me hide them. You cannot paint light without shadow, she said, and she was right. A sky with only stars and no darkness is not a sky at all. It is just noise. So we painted the hard aspects too, and
the exhibit got deeper for it. Not darker, more honest. The kind of honest that lets a stranger recognize their own life in someone else's sky. ## The One Beat, In Color By the end I understood something that had been sitting in my tagline all along, waiting for me to actually believe it. Sound and paint and starlight are all trying to say the same thing. That we are not as separate as we look. I follow the one beat that joins us all. I always have. I just never saw it in color before. The exhibit will hang in a room where people can walk around inside a chart, the way I walk around inside a bowl's tone. If it works, they will not learn astrology from it. They will remember something they already knew, the way a song reminds you of a feeling you could not name. ## Closing Reflection I still cannot draw very well. The artist still laughs at my arrows, which have not gotten any straighter.
But I have stopped believing that translating the sky is someone else's job. Every medium is a way of listening. The telescope listens with light, the bowl listens with sound, the canvas listens with color. So if you have ever wondered whether your own work counts as spiritual practice, whatever that work is, I would tell you what this project taught me. It is not the tool that matters. It is the tuning. Draw it, sing it, paint it, chart it. The sky has been trying to reach us through all of them at once.
