Hawk over the arroyo after session
By Sol Runemaster
Hi there. Monday sessions are usually the quiet spine of my week: crystal bowls wiped, mats unrolled, windows cracked to that dry Santa Fe air that smells like dust and a second chance. This Monday a private client left with shoulders lower than when she arrived, and I felt the familiar mix of gratitude and emptiness that follows good work. I packed the bowls, wrote notes without turning her weather into content, and decided the rest of the afternoon belonged to walking instead of email. The inbox can wait when the body has already done honest labor. I am Samuel Reynolds, Sol Runemaster online, sound healer and astrological guide at fifty-one, still an ESFJ who wants everyone fed and an innocent archetype who denies hardship until the body files a complaint. The desert retreat teaching dates are on the calendar with conditions written in ink. Star mapping Wednesdays still happen under a
backyard sky that asks nothing. None of that was on my mind when I took a wrong turn near an arroyo and a hawk drew a slow circle like it was correcting my route without charging a consulting fee. I do not collect animal omens as content. I do notice when the day insists on being larger than my to-do list. This is that kind of note, written for the people who work with spirit and still need to grocery shop, and for the people who grocery shop and still need a reason to look up. What the session left in the room She had arrived early again, watch-checking, apology-ready, the way many of us arrive when rest feels illegal and we are paying someone to give us permission we will not give ourselves. We did not solve her workplace. We gave her nervous system a different rhythm for fifty minutes and one practical rest block written in ink, not pencil. After she left I sat with ordinary silence:
a truck on the street, a bird that did not care about our sacred hour, the residual hum in the brass. Ordinary is part of healing. I will keep dying on that small hill even if it never trends. Self-doubt still visits after private work. Did I talk too much. Did I interpret too soon. Did I host so carefully that I forgot to leave space for her own knowing. Preparation is my answer, not performance. I cleaned instruments the way my grandmother cleaned a kitchen after company: thorough, unglamorous, a little tender. Then I put on shoes that can take dust and left the speaker unplugged on purpose so I would not carry the room into the walk. The walk that refused to stay scenic Santa Fe light in late afternoon can make even a bad week look intentional for twenty minutes. I meant to take the familiar loop past adobe walls and the neighbor who waters plants with the patience I want for my own
projects. Somehow I drifted toward a dry arroyo path I usually skip because the footing gets honest and my knees have opinions about honesty. The hawk appeared above the far bank, not dramatic, not cinematic, just present and unimpressed with my human pacing. No soundtrack. No perfect composition. Only a living shape against blue that does not care about my brand. I stopped. Not because I am a man who communes on command, but because my neck tilted up without a meeting request. The bird rode a thermal and left. That was the whole miracle: attention interrupted kindly. Minnesota childhoods trained me for different skies, different weather politics, different ideas of what counts as a sign. These desert interruptions still feel like a language I am learning mid-sentence, which is fine. Mid-sentence is where most real life happens. People ask if I read every bird as a message. No.
Dismissive skeptics annoy me; so do people who turn every crow into a personal prophecy and then sell the prophecy back to themselves. The middle path is noticing without annexing the wild into my marketing. The hawk did not become a logo. It became a pause. Synchronicity without the sales pitch In session work I caution clients against outsourcing free will to transit alerts. The same rule applies to me with wildlife. The hawk did not cancel my responsibilities. It did not write the retreat lesson plan. It did not replace the hard conversations about rest that freelancers avoid until our voices crack. It did reset the volume on my hurry. Sometimes that is enough medicine for a Monday, and enough humility for a man who likes to be useful. I thought about Ansuz, the rune that still shows up when I need to stop performing wisdom and speak plainly. Plainly: I was tired of being useful in
theory and sparse in rest. The retreat conditions I wrote earlier still stand. Rest midweek. No stacking private clients the night I return. Clear cues, not miracles in linen. The hawk was not a loophole around those conditions. It was a mirror with feathers, and mirrors are only useful if you keep looking after the pretty moment ends. Back home I made tea and traced a few stars early with a red flashlight like a child who refuses to wait for Wednesday. Star mapping is orientation. Orientation after a good session keeps me from turning every successful hour into proof I should work more. Wonder in simplicity is not denial if I also schedule rest like it is a client who paid in advance. What I am taking into the rest of the week Group sound night prep will stay simple: less performance, more clear physical cues, bowls that do not need a TED talk, and honesty about what sound can and
cannot reorganize in a life. Tai Chi practice with the cafe friend continues because body knowledge travels better than slogans, especially when wind and sun will test both at the desert week. If you book with me, bring your watch if you must, and be willing to set it face down for a while. The room works better when time is a guest, not a supervisor. If you are waiting for a sign to rest, consider this permission written by a man who almost argued with a hawk about productivity. You do not need a raptor. You need ink on a calendar, a walk that is allowed to go slightly wrong, and one person in your life who will not applaud your martyrdom. Small medicine counts. Repeatable medicine counts more. Closing Reflection I am grateful for the client who trusted the room, the arroyo that corrected my route, the neighbor still watering plants, and the sky that does not invoice. Small medicine
still counts while big trips load the car and the mind. I will keep showing up for Mondays and Wednesdays and the ordinary silence after the last tone fades. Until next time 🌙 If you need a session, the calendar has honest openings that will not be squeezed into martyrdom. If you need a walk, leave the phone on silent and look up once without needing a caption. The hawk will not bill you. Neither will the dust.
