Reading Water: What Rivers Taught Me That Charts Never Could
By Altair Seerstone
I grew up next to a river. Not a big one. Not the kind that makes maps. Just a wide, slow-moving body of water that wound through our town like a vein. I spent my childhood watching it. The way it changed color with the seasons. The way it rose after rain and shrank in August. The way it never stopped moving, even when it looked still. I did not know it then, but I was learning to read. WHAT WATER KNOWS A river is the oldest divination tool there is. Older than cards. Older than charts. Older than writing. You sit by moving water long enough, and you start to understand things that cannot be put into words. The way everything flows. The way nothing stays. The way the deepest currents are invisible from the surface. I became an astrologer later in life. I learned the language of houses and aspects and transits. And I was good at it. But I always felt something was missing. The charts were
static. Frozen moments. Snapshots of a sky that was already moving on. Water is never static. A river is a chart in motion. Constantly updating. Constantly rewriting itself. There is no fixed meaning in a river. There is only flow. THE LESSON OF THE BEND The river taught me one thing above all others. Water does not resist obstacles. It goes around them. Over time, it wears them down. But it never fights them head-on. It finds the path of least resistance, not because it is weak, but because it is wise. It knows it has somewhere to be. And it will get there. Not in a straight line. But it will get there. This is the lesson I try to give my clients. Your path is not a straight line. It is a river. It will bend. It will meander. It will sometimes seem to be going in the wrong direction entirely. But if you trust the current, you will arrive. Not where you expected. Where you needed to be.
