Joshua Tree packing and a long documentary call
By Castor Shadowmancer

Hey there. The Joshua Tree retreat folder finally has a packing list that looks like it belongs to an adult human and not a romantic poet with a death wish. Water plan. Shade plan. Emergency contacts. A bold note that says do not schedule sunrise Tai Chi and a deep sharing circle back to back without food in between. I learned that the hard way in smaller rooms where blood sugar became philosophy. Celestial Insights LLC pays rent with sessions and workshops; retreats are how I remember the work is not only office blinds and Saturn returns. They are also where overthinking tries to build a labyrinth instead of a simple door people can walk through without a password. Today I chose doors. Several small ones labeled tape, first aid, and truth in advertising. The documentary team called at eleven about ancient constellation segments and whether I could speak to camera without sounding like a
museum pamphlet that swallowed a self-help book. I had notes ready and still drifted mid-sentence into a philosophy riff about navigation as metaphor until I caught myself, apologized once, and returned to the shot list like a professional. Analysis paralysis is my shadow; film crews do not need my entire inner library or every mentor I have ever quoted. They need clear beats, honest uncertainty where scholarship is incomplete, and a human who will not invent myths for the camera just because silence feels awkward on tape. I gave them that as best I could. Then I hung up, drank actual water instead of more coffee, and stared at the packing list until it stopped looking like a moral test and started looking like care. Los Angeles light through the office window was the gold that makes strip malls look intentional and makes tired consultants feel briefly cinematic. I thought about Rae from
the Saturn session only long enough to hope her three experiments are going, then closed that drawer on purpose. Other people's charts are not my after-hours hobby. Boundaries are spiritual practice too, even when water-sign empathy wants to keep swimming. What retreat prep actually includes Not vision boards with desert stock photos. Liability language reviewed without glazing over. Dietary notes that respect real bodies. A map of where people can step away and cry without an audience if they need to, because forced vulnerability is just another performance. I wrote a one-page values sheet and taped a printout inside the bin: no forced sharing, no guru cosplay, no promising the desert will heal what therapy, sleep, and honest conversations should handle. Wonder without logistics strands people among pretty rocks. Logistics without wonder is a corporate offsite with better scenery and
worse coffee. I want the middle path and I want it written down so midnight me cannot romanticize the edges into something unsafe. I ordered a new thermos because the last one died on the scouting trip like a bad omen with a slow leak and a sense of humor. Practical magic: hot coffee that stays hot while you are being bitten by wind. I checked the hard drive backup of location photos and labeled folders without the word FINAL in them because I have learned. I texted a co-facilitator three questions and only three, because over-communicating is how I pretend control when I am anxious. They answered with bullet points and no fluff. I nearly wept with relief at the absence of spiritual adjectives where a yes or no belonged. Griffith Park Tai Chi happened this morning before the call. Sunrise, breath, the city below still half asleep and already loud in places. Missing it last week made the
office day waterier in the wrong way, like my thoughts had nowhere to drain. Showing up made packing less existential and more sequential. Bodies are not footnotes to cosmology. They are the instrument you bring to the desert whether you admit it or not. The documentary notes I will stand behind I sent a revised outline that marks where sources disagree instead of sanding the seams for television smoothness. If they cut the uncertainty in the edit, that is their craft and their audience contract. Mine is refusing to become a certainty vending machine with better lighting and a softer voice. Loneliness visits when you take that stance in an industry that rewards heat. Loneliness is still better than selling fear in sequins and calling it education. I can live with fewer bookings if the ones I keep can look me in the eye later. Evening walk after packing the first bin. No podcasts, no
chart apps, no replaying the call for mistakes I might have made. Just traffic and the smell of someone's dinner and the reminder that I live in a body in a city, not only in transits and call sheets and retreat PDFs. That reminder is medicine I have to re-prescribe daily. Why I am writing this before the trip Because the feed prefers the finished desert glow and the triumphant group photo. Because packing lists are the real apprenticeship alongside office days and client tears. Because if you are planning something that matters to other people's nervous systems, the unglamorous checklist is a form of love. Bring water. Bring boundaries. Bring one question you are not afraid sounds boring. Boring questions are often the true ones. Fancy questions are sometimes just fear in nicer clothes. Closing Reflection I will keep the logistics tab and the wonder tab open side by side until we leave,
and I will sleep before I reorganize the bins a fourth time for the illusion of control. If the documentary needs another pass, they can wait until after I am not running on adrenaline and metaphors. Stay cosmic 🌌 See you on the other side of the packing tape. May your thermos hold, your stories stay honest, and your desert nights include enough silence that nobody feels required to perform enlightenment under the stars.
