Sun gazing through Karl and Karl won

hey! Elliot here, still spellweaving, still photographing, still getting humbled by weather in public. I committed to a week of sunrise sun gazing from my rooftop in the Mission because discipline sounds noble at night and ridiculous at 6:10 a.m. when your blanket has jurisdiction. Monday I made it up there with tea and good intentions. Tuesday Karl the Fog made it up there with a blanket of his own and basically unionized the horizon. For non-SF folks, Karl is what locals call the fog. Not cute in person. Very cute in postcards. I have lived here long enough to respect Karl the way you respect a roommate who eats your yogurt and somehow makes you grateful for probiotics. I am a spiritual consultant, y'know, which means people assume I have a special relationship with light. I do. It is mostly me apologizing to it for being late. The practice versus the punchline Sun gazing rules are

simple on paper. Bare feet optional, ego discouraged, eyes soft, time capped. I follow a conservative method because I like my retinas employed. The point is not staring contests with a star. The point is rhythm. You show up. You breathe. You remember you are small and the sky is patient. Karl disagrees with patience. Karl is a Capricorn if weather signs existed, which they should. Monday went fine. Gold edge on the rooftops. Pigeons doing pigeon politics. I took photos after, not during, because I am not trying to monetize blindness. The shots were decent. Warm grain. A laundry line like a constellation of socks. I posted one and a guy commented that fog is a filter and I said thanks Karl and he thought I was being poetic. I was being literal. Tuesday I climbed to the roof and could not find the sun. Just gray soft enough to steal depth from photos and moods. I stood there like a person

waiting for a bus that runs on myth. My neighbor Yvonne yelled up, you gonna glare at the cloud again. She was walking her chihuahua in a sweater that said Boss. I said I am receiving transmission. She said you are receiving dew. Fair. What the fog taught anyway I sat on the tar paper and switched from gazing to listening, which is the backup sacrament when your primary sacrament no-shows. Distant BART rumble. A motorcycle that needed therapy. Someone practicing trumpet badly and bravely three blocks away. The city has a choir even when the sky refuses spotlight. I wrote that down because it sounded like something I would put on a card and sell, then I crossed it out because I am trying to break that habit. Photography saved the morning. Fog is rude to sun gazing and generous to contrast. I shot the water tank. The antenna forest. Yvonne waved from her window with the chihuahua like we

were in a silent film. I got three frames I actually like, which is a high yield day for me. One looks like the roof is floating. That is not enlightenment. That is optics. Sometimes optics is enough to keep you from quitting. At work later a client asked if fog blocks spiritual downloads. I said fog blocks visibility, downloads are your own bandwidth problem. She laughed. I meant it gently. We spend so much energy asking if conditions are perfect when perfect is mostly a marketing tone. Karl is not anti-spiritual. Karl is anti-performance. I respect that more than I did at 6:10. Bus stop tarot and other honest magic Wednesday I brought a single tarot card in my pocket instead of climbing the roof. Pulled The Hermit at the 22 bus stop while a kid next to me ate a burrito with commitment. I did not lecture him about symbols. I looked at the card and thought about how the Hermit carries

his own lamp and still gets rained on. The burrito kid said nice picture and I said thanks, it is a lamp situation. He shrugged. Perfect exchange. Thursday the sun showed up like it was late to its own party. I gazed for four minutes, cried a little, which happens, not dramatic tears, more like your body remembers it is alive and gets sentimental about it. Friday I skipped because I had a consult and overslept. Spiritual practice with gaps is still practice. Anyone selling you flawless streaks is selling you anxiety with incense. Saturday I printed two of the fog photos for my studio wall. Yvonne came by for tea and said Karl looks handsome in black and white. I said do not flirt with my atmospheric nemesis. She said nemesis is intimacy with extra steps. I hate that she is right about half my life. Closing Reflection If you are trying to be devout in a city that refuses clean horizons,

welcome. Bring a camera as backup altar. Bring humor as emergency gear. The sky will show up when it shows up. Catch you on the flip side! 😄 — Aurora
